Zrazy’s first album in ten years sees a return with electrifying diversity

Ireland’s Zrazy blissfully combine silky and searing vocals with a stunning musicality of mature soul, pop, jazz-electronica in their innovative new album, ‘The Art of Happy Accidents’.  This unique release is sure to add to their list of accolades which include an array of global awards including the OutMusic USA Award for Best Album with ‘Dream On’ and an Irish Gold disc for No1 smash hit single ‘Ooh aah Paul McGrath’ (Italia ’90). This Irish Duo have a sophisticated take on the world and call to mind hints of Tracey Thorn, Grace Jones and St.Germain, while retaining a unique Celtic soulfulness.

Set for release Monday 2nd November, Zrazy deliver their long-awaited new album with flawless style and belief. With their unique fusion of soul, funk, jazz and electronica, vocalist Maria Walsh and saxophonist/pianist Carole Nelson unify with captivating invention, thriving stronger than ever since the pair formed in 1992.

From their beginnings, Zrazy have tackled social and political issues head-on through their music from feminism to abortion to gay rights, leading to an outright ban on Ireland’s national radio – an issue covered by France’s ARTE TV. Studded with social conscience, ’The Art of Happy Accidents’ sees the two consummate musicians and songwriters at the peak of their powers opening up jazz and soul to refreshing new pop melodies and enlivening deep funky rhythms.   Line Up includes: Maria Walsh vocals, flute, percussion;  Carole nelson: sax, piano; Dominic Mullen: drums;Cormac O Brien: bass

Twenty one year old Darragh Kelly from Greystones died suddenly in his student accommodation in 2003. He was a popular, fit, sports loving young man with no previous history of a heart condition. Following family screening, not available in this country at that time, his younger sister Eleanor was eventually found to have a condition which can cause an electrical disturbance of the heart rhythm, Long QT Syndrome. She was given life saving treatment and now lives a very normal life with a normal life expectancy.

In 2006 the Mater Family Screening Clinic & CRYP, Tallaght were established to screen high risk families for conditions that can cause SADS (Sudden Adult/Arrhythmia Death Syndrome). The clinics, which are funded totally by charitable donations, have already screened thousands of families.

In the same year, Darragh’s mother Maureen, together with other similarly  bereaved parents, formed a support group in association with the Irish Heart Foundation. Their mission is to support affected families and effect change so that others may live. Much progress has been made in the last ten years especially through the Irish Heart Foundation’s Council on Sudden Cardiac Death of which Maureen is secretary.

The Kelly family would like to raise awareness of the fact that up to a hundred young people die of SADS each year in this country and that any family who has suffered a sudden unexplained death of a young person, including SIDS should have their family screened.

To paraphrase Jimi, "Move over Rover and let the music scene's best-kept secret take over.."

There's a thrilling new blues-rock guitarist banging down the door and his name is Mike Brookfield,   asix-string wizard axe-slinger who's caught the ear of Alan "Irish" O'Duffy, a studio legend who only produced records with Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Richie Blackmore, Peter Frampton and Paul McCartney.

So, Alan, out of ten, tell us, how high do you rate Mike Brookfield

"Nine, dude. This guy's an electric nine. He's sensational."

Brookfield is based in Ireland. He arrived with a history of playing in pick-up bands, casual session work and fronting a variety of West End rock'n'roll musicals.  Right now, he's consolidating a line-up that can carry the turbo-powered dynamics of a house-style that incorporates the emotional overload of the early Delta blues pickers and the pyrotechnic flash of the modern amped-up generation. It's not simply about fretboard technique with Brookfield, an accomplished songwriter who knows how to turn out a melody that hits deep. It's all about emotion, telling a story and connecting. It's the Blues.  This train's leaving the station. So grab your ticket now 'cos you won't want to be trying to explain how you missed out. Especially since we gave you a heads-up.

Mike has just released an album which is co-written by Eamon Carr (Horslips/Music journalist) and has producer Alan O’Duffy on board (Rory Gallagher, Paul McCartney).

Following on from Van Morrison's 70th birthday concert in Cyprus Avenue at the end of  August, 7 piece tribute band - Celtic Soul - from Van's home town of Bangor, have just played 2 sold out shows back to back a in celebration of Van’s 70th birthday. Celtic Soul also just got the official seal of approval with one of their very own posters signed by Morrison himself!

Receiving critical acclaim from devout Van fans wherever they perform, you’ll hear the big hits like Jackie Wilson Said, Days Like This, and of course Brown Eyed Girl. You’ll also hear Ballerina, Cyprus Avenue, and In the Garden among many others in a packed show.

Several live ‘unplugged’ performances on Gerry Kelly’s show on BBC Radio Ulster have boosted the band’s following. BBC’s Ralph McLean, a massive Van Morrison fan himself, describes Celtic Soul as ‘a great band’ and ‘a very fine tribute’. With more years than they care to remember playing in blues, folk, trad and jazz bands these musicians have the ingredients to combine and deliver Van’s music authentically.

In 1997, Robert Sarazin Blake dropped out of college and hit the road. The folk music of his father’s house had combined with the DIY punk ethos of the day and produced his first batch of songs. Performing 200 shows a year, Blake is a world class performer in a neighborhood venue. The show is a combination of songs and rambles landing somewhere between a concert and a theatrical instillation

His songs continue to be influenced by Bob Dylan, John Prine, Shel Silverstein, Christy Moore, Lou Reed, Joni Mitchell- his stories and stage banter by Arlo Guthrie, Garrison Keillor, Spalding Gray, his outlook by Naomi Kline, Jim Page, Amy Goodman, Noam Chomsky, and his essence by James Baldwin, Henry Miller, Jeannette Winterson, John Steinbeck, and Philip Roth!   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weQK3oNhyCA&feature=youtu.be

Max García Conover grew up at the end of a dead-end road in Western New York, listening to 90s rap on his walkman, chasing down snakes and crayfish in the creek behind his house. When he came around to listening to folk songwriters, it was mostly for the words. He has written several hundred since, from delicate, impressionistic story songs to full on foot stomping ones, combining intricate fingerstyle guitar work with a gruff voice, a suitcase drum, and a lot of words.

Now based in Portland, Maine, Conover travels the country, drawing on his deep and ever growing catalogue, playing a new set every night, and telling stories and fables between songs. In 2012, he was chosen as Maine’s Best New Act, and he’s since shared the stage with bands like Lake Street Dive and Frontier Ruckus, drawing comparisons to The Tallest Man On Earth, The Mountain Goats, and Shakey Graves.

Sonny Condell the creative core and inspiration for the band continues to invent and innovative. He writes music and songs that are powerful, poetic, soulful and joyful. He is one of Irelands most enduring creative artists and with Robbie Overson and Philip King creates the signature sound that is Scullion.

Scullion’s back pages include the anthems, ‘Down In the City’, ‘Eyelids into Snow’ and ‘John the Baptist’. Recent Scullion performances have sold out in a heartbeat, reconfirming their status as one of the best and most popular bands ever.  Scullion grew from a chance meeting in the late seventies, of its two main founders, Philip King and Sonny Condell. As a band they started rehearsing and writing in a small apartment above a chip shop in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, which eventually followed with regular appearances at various Dublin haunts including the Meeting Place in Dorset St. Dublin.

Scullion recorded 5 albums,Scullion (Produced by P.J.Curtis) Balance and Control (Produced by John Martyn), The White Side of Night, (Produced by Nicky Ryan) and Spin and Longwave.  Recently they released a new Live Set of Songs…. “Under The Moon”, recorded live in the beautiful Triskel Christchurch in Cork City it contains some of their most moving and special performances. This evening will be special, intimate, warm and uplifting.

Stephanie has performed regularly on the east village anti-folk scene; sung with Bobby McFerrin in Carnegie Hall, directed the musical program of a Brooklyn burlesque series, covered Busta Rhymes’ “Break Ya Neck” in the skeletal remains of a bombed-out cathedral in Nuremberg, been invited to perform official showcases at SXSW and International Folk Alliance, and self-released 4 full-length albums

J Wagner is a songwriter from Austin,Texas who spends the majority of his time writing songs and driving alone in the U.S. to perform them.

Raised in the deserts of New Mexico and one time Park Ranger of Joshua Tree National Park, Wagner often draws his lyrics from this desert landscape. His song “If I Go, I’m Goin, has been covered by the country artist, Bart Crow, by the Denver symphony orchestra, and also appears on Season Four of the TV show, Californication. He co-writes often with his long-time friends Gregory Alan Isakov and Ron Scott. Two of these co-writes appear on his new 2014 release, The Runaway Kid. Wagner has been dubbed “A number one best bet” by the Austin American-Statesman, The Dallas Morning News has called him “A Texas folk music staple”, and the Austin Chronicle gives “The Runaway Kid” a perfect “Four Stars” and refers to Wagner as “A commander of words and Ideation”.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8taOhCzUT8g&feature=youtu.be

PLEASE NOTE: This show has moved to the bigger stage at Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray.  Show starts at 8pm. Tickets 16e/18e   Book online - www.mermaidartscentre.ie or phone box office 01 2724030

A music journey charting women’s role in the progression of the blues, features Flo Mc Sweeney, Clara Rose Monahan, Emma Nicolai & Jhil Quinn. This show premieres in the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray on Sat July 16th.

It was Valentine’s day 1920 when Mamie Smith stepped up to the microphone in The Okeh Company in New York and shouted out “That Thing Called Love”, making the first recording of a black female vocalist! It led to a second recording which sold 75000 copies in its first month of release and although it wasn’t a classic blues recording it opened the door to a generation of “Classic Blues” vocalists.

Through that door came Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter and many more transforming the blues from local folk music into the art form it is today. These blues women brought black culture into the American main stream. These women are the “Classic Women“ of the blues and have made a significant contribution to the development of jazz and blues in popular music. As the recording industry developed, male country blues singers were discovered, but it was the ladies who kick started it all!

In ‘Ladies in the Blues’ we pay tribute to these women, singing such songs as CC Ryder, St James Infirmary, Black Coffee Blues, I Put a Spell on You, Bring it on Home to Me, Ball and Chain, Piece of My Heart, Feelin' Good, Little Red Rooster, I'd Rather Go Blind, Ain't Nobody's Business and many more.

The band will be joined by Greenshine - Girl in the Lavendar Dress - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzPzW7BW7Gk

GREENSHINE is a family trio comprising Noel Shine, Mary Greene and their daughter Ellie. Their material straddles the boundaries of contemporary, folk and roots and includes many self-penned songs. Their fast picking and close harmonies are a treat to the ear. Noel is a multi-instrumentalist, turning his hand to guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, bouzouki and traditional whistle and this musical dexterity had seen him much in demand as a session and band player by artists as diverse as The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem and funk and soul legends The Republic of Loose amongst many others.

Mary brings rhythm guitar to the mix and her voice is a wonderfully versatile instrument. She has added her talents to the albums of Christy Moore, John Spillane, Mick Hanly and Frances Black as well as cult psychedelic outfit Dr. Strangely Strange.  Ellie Shine has grown up surrounded by music and has been performing in concerts and festivals since the age of 13.  She has a huge interest in the songs of the Muskerry Gaeltacht and reached the All-Ireland final of Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann's Sean-Nós Singing competition in her debut try-out. She accompanies herself on the ukulele.

An insightful lyricist and powerful live performer, Jack O’Rourke began 2016 in the manner in which he finished 2015 – a growing national profile with TV and radio appearances and critical acclaim, alongside the first tracks from his approaching debut album.  His song 'Silence' was chosen to soundtrack the Amnesty yes campaign in the marriage referendum, he has appeared on The Late Late , Sold Out his first Dublin headline show and recently picked up a 1st place award at The International Songwriting Competition,

His songs speak of various human conditions with melodic flair, through young but wise eyes. There already have been flattering comparisons with the likes of David Bowie and Rufus Wainwright, but Jack has been determined to find his own voice amid a plentiful sea of influences – to ensure it is the unique qualities he possesses that he becomes best known for.

“Every nook and cranny of The Other Side of Now is filled with harmony, rhythm and melody. The E.P. is crafted, both ‘Shining For You’ and the title-track move in great dynamic sweeps that showcase O’Rourke has total control over the sound, knowing when to rein it in or unleash it in equal measure. What’s more, the E.P. sounds exactly like the type of record Jack O’Rourke wanted to make, and you can’t say fairer than that. Rating: 9/10”   — The Last Mixed Tape

“Jack O’ Rourke’s music has a grace and a glory to it that will stop you in your tracks and make you forget where you were going! “Silence” is one of the songs of the year for me.. “I’ll Forget You In The Morning” took me away too .... Beautiful honest songwriting delivered with a transporting musicality that will take you there... wherever you are going!”   — Fiachna O' Braonáin, RTE Radio 1

“Silence is a modern rebel song. The song is truly beautiful. It the change that happened in Ireland”   — Cerys Matthews, BBC4 - The Great Irish Songbook, 2015

“Cork singer with oodles of soul, blues and jazz, all wrapped up with a striking modern pop bow”   — Jim Carroll, The Irish Times

A lot has been written and a lot has been said, whispered, recounted, alleged, supposed and presumed. It’s all quite forgotten now and the songs remain the same, they remain a testament to Mary Coughlan’s seemingly timeless and endless talent. Her smoky, bluesy, boozy drawl has always been a seduction, no matter what the subject. The vocal marrying of sardonic wit, visceral rage, orgiastic between the sheets passion, the tenderest of sorrowful regrets; this is Mary’s talent. Regardless of the elements she chooses to manipulate with flawless ease, Mary’s voice has always been an unforeseen, sudden seduction. This is why she is so loved. Throughout the over 25 years of her quite extraordinary recording career Mary has drawn heavily from her legendary heroes; Billie Holiday’s grievous, teary outpourings, the husky flirtations of Peggy Lee, Van Morrison’s soulful wails, the defiant chanteusery of Edith Piaf. All are present and correct in her delivery. Even so, Mary, with her naked honesty makes every song her own; they belong to her and nobody else.

Tir na nOg have been described as Alt Folk, Prog Folk, Psych Folk, and even Space Folk!. But the duo, formed by Leo O'Kelly & Sonny Condell in 1970, transcends all these categories. What is not in doubt is that they are two of the most original and influential songwriters and performers Ireland has ever produced.

John Blek is constantly proving himself to be a prolific writer of some of the most beautiful folk music being created today, both solo and with his band John Blek & the Rats. It is less than 12 months since the band released their last record and already John is ready to share his latest work “Cut the Light”. He has just  announced the release of his highly anticipated second solo album entitled “Cut the Light”. This sophomore outing will be hitting shelves and online stores on the 30th  September 2016.

The album was recorded in Bantry, West Cork, Ireland over a period of four days in early spring. A collection of eleven original contemporary folk songs carefully crafted and documented with the help of Davie Ryan (Drums), Brian Hassett (Bass Guitar) and Brian Casey (Producer). With a sound that harks back to that of Bert Jansch and Liege & Lief era Fairport Convention, “Cut the Light” is likely to become a favourite amongst both new listeners and existing fans.

“Cut the Light is an album I have wanted to record for quite a while. I pushed myself to become a better instrumentalist and songwriter on these songs and really focused on creating a collection of pieces that could live together on a cohesive album. It’s something I’m very proud of...…. “ John Blek

The album is being put out independently in Ireland on John Blek and the Rats own WARR label and through Tonetoaster Records in Germany.

Honor Heffernan (vocals) and Trevor Knight (keyboards) together with their band (Ed Deane guitar, Garvan Gallagher bass, and Tom Jamieson drums) will present an exciting evening of original music interspersed with songs by writers such as Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Brecht and Weill , Diamanda Gallas and Peter Green.

The original songs will be taken from their acclaimed show “The Whistling Girl”, featuring music composed by Trevor that was inspired by the poetry of the great American poet, wit and critic Dorothy Parker.

The songs are each infused with a unique ‘voice’, creating individual tableaux or dream moments from Parker’s psyche, conjuring up images from her tempestuous life of outrageous celebrity as founding member of the notorious Algonquin set in New York, and as civil rights activist in America and Spain during the Spanish Civil War.

“I shall stay the way I am, because I do not give a damn!”     (Dorothy Parker)

Contemporary folk & indie night with Orchid Collective band & singer songwriter Cat Dowling.

Cat Dowling writes beautiful dark pop songs with her voice been lauded as one of the most wonderful and evocative in Irish contemporary music. Dowling has played and fronted numerous music projects, released several albums and has lent her vocals on many collaborative projects the most recent of which was selected for ABCs - How to to get away with Murder starring Emmy- winning actress Viola Davis.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-u5RkiqUjeE

Orchid Collective have been together for over a year and have gigged relentlessly throughout Ireland working tirelessly to create a fresh and exciting live show for their growing audience. They mix a combination of vocal harmonies and ambient soundscapes, akin to the likes of their inspirations - from old Californian folk artists like Crosby, Stills and Nash and Neil Young to modern day artists Villagers, James Vincent McMorrow and Bon Iver. - “Melding indie- pop hooks, alternative- folk tinged vocal harmonies and post- rock inflected grandeur, the sound of ‘Lay As Stone’ bodes very well for the groups future” The Last Mix Tape
