keeping live music alive
Pat Byrne, Venue Virtuouso
One could say that the Hot Spot is a café or a venue or an “internet café” because it is. But it’s more than that!
It has even been suggested by some that it is a “coffee house“, a bit like the ones that Bob Dylan used to play when he arrived in New York in the early sixties and it has been compared to Caffé Lena the legendary one in Saratoga Springs which along with Dylan also hosted Pete Seeger, and Arlo Gutherie. Or indeed The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, the oldest Rock Club of them all where the likes of Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Jackson Browne, Norah Jones and thousands more.
One visitor compared the place to Chickiewahwah in New Orleans and another to Sin é in New York. Other customers exclaimed that The Hot Spot is like Wallys Café in Boston where it all began and is the oldest Jazz Club in existence, founded in 1947. Another claimed that we are like The Comedy Cellar on McDougal Street, New York City which hosted Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock but we thought he was having a laugh! Although we do have The Gas Company Comedy Club every month as well as the likes of Legendary Tir Na Nog, Mick Hanly, Amelia Curren and the latest and hottest singer- song writer Hozier, who started out with us and guess what? You can bring your own beer and wine for a small corkage charge! You can also bring your guitar and play at our regular open mic sessions or even read a poem.
However none of these other clubs have fibre optic internet access, serve the best toasties this side of the Dargle River, shows kid’s movies on Saturday afternoons while Dad and Mum relax with really decent coffee or even get their computers repaired. It’s the only place where Granny can get one of our friendly staff to pay her household charge for her or help her check in online, while the kids surf the net, while the Hotspot Ukulele Club host lessons in the corner. But we don’t like to Boast!
So lets just say “The Hotspot” – Greystones, County Wicklow is where its all Happening!
